A Prayer for When Support Fades - God's Promise to Never Leave You
By Rachel Wojo

Bible Reading:
"Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.' So we say with confidence, 'The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?' Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." Hebrews 13:5-8

Listen or Read Below:

I was sitting in the church lobby after service when I noticed her. A mom from our community whose husband had tragically died months earlier. She was standing alone by the coffee station, looking around the room with this expression I recognized too well. That look of hoping someone might notice or even come over and ask how she's really doing.

But people were busy. Catching up on the week, discussing lunch plans, and then chasing their kids toward the parking lot. The initial wave of support that had surrounded her right after the accident; the meal trains, the constant check-ins, and the invitations had all gradually faded back to the normal rhythm of life.

I was trying to focus on a current conversation, but out of the corner of my eye, I saw her gather her things and leave alone, and my heart broke. Not just for her, but because I realized how many times I'd been that person walking away, assuming someone else would reach out. It’s easy to think the crisis support was still flowing.

Later that week, I thought about her again. How isolating it must feel when everyone else moves on but your pain is still so raw. It made me remember my own seasons of loss, when the phone calls stopped coming and people seemed uncomfortable with my tears. But it also made me think about how I'd done the same thing to others. I’d offered intense support during the crisis, then gradually returned to my own life.

Here's what hit me: people will always disappoint us, not because they're cruel, but because they're human. They have their own struggles, their own capacity limits, and their own forgetfulness. But there's Someone who never fades away, never gets tired of our pain, and He never moves on to the next thing.

God doesn't promise that people won't disappoint us. He doesn't guarantee that friends will always know what to say or family will always understand. But He promises that He is this unchanging, eternal God and He will never walk away from us.

That word "never"? In the original text, it's actually a double negative. It's like God is saying, "No way, not ever, not under any circumstances will I leave you." Then He says it again. It's the strongest possible way to say it in the Hebrew language.

And you know what's beautiful about this? It's not based on how well we're handling our pain or how much faith we can muster up. Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His presence isn't dependent on our performance. I’m so thankful for this promise and that it is not only for me, but for you too.

Let's Pray:

Heavenly Father,
Right now I'm bringing You all the places where I feel abandoned. The friendships that have grown cold and the family members who don't understand. The silence when I desperately need to hear from someone who cares.
God, I confess that sometimes I've measured Your presence by whether other people show up for me, and I've let the actions of imperfect people make me question Your perfect faithfulness. But You promise that You will never leave me, not when I'm falling apart, not when I'm asking the same desperate questions over and over, not even when I doubt that You're really there.

Help me to feel Your presence today, especially in the quiet moments when loneliness tries to convince me that I'm forgotten, and remind me that Your love isn't dependent on anyone else's response to my pain. You are with me in the 2 AM tears, in the silent scrolling, and in the empty chair at the dinner table.
Thank You that I can say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper," and help me to live from that truth today.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
